From 'Olufunmi' to Gospel Music: Former Styl-Plus Star Tunde Akinsanmi Opens Up About His Journey of Faith
TheRadar.ngFormer Styl-Plus singer Tunde Akinsanmi explains his transition into gospel music and why he believes faith has always been part of his musical journey.
Nigerian music lovers who grew up listening to the popular music group Styl-Plus will certainly remember hit songs such as 'Olufunmi', 'Imagine That' and 'Call My Name'.
However, one of the group's founding members, Tunde Akinsanmi, popularly known as Tunde Styl-Plus, is now exploring a different musical direction through gospel music.
In a recent interview published by The Guardian, the singer opened up about his musical journey, his faith and his decision to express his beliefs through music.
His New Gospel Direction
Tunde released an Afrogospel single titled 'Atobijulo' on September 4, 2026, featuring Da Capo.
The Yoruba title, which means 'the greatest of all', celebrates God's greatness and magnificence.
Unlike the romantic songs that made him popular during his Styl-Plus days, the new song focuses on praise and worship.
Why He Believes Nothing Has Really Changed
Speaking about his transition, Tunde explained that expressing love through music and expressing devotion to God are not necessarily different creative experiences.
He believes the sincerity and vulnerability that characterised his earlier love songs can also be expressed through worship.
The singer also reflected on the influence Styl-Plus had on Nigerian music and how the group combined international R&B sounds with indigenous Nigerian musical elements.
What Fans Should Expect
For listeners who remember the golden days of Styl-Plus, Tunde's gospel direction presents an interesting development.
His journey also highlights how established Nigerian entertainers continue to explore new creative expressions.
With 'Atobijulo', the singer is introducing listeners to another side of his musical identity.
